1 Work, Two Weeks
1/6/13
I made this piece after seeing the work of Catherine Mackey. Her work inspired me and threw my work in a different direction. Now including typography and several layers my work feels much stronger than before and I would like to make many pieces like this in the future. This piece was also awarded an Honorable Mention in the 2013 Scholastics Art and Writing Competition. One of my favorite parts in this piece is the news paper that is still visible in the background. It had a lot of interesting words and different type faces. I also really enjoyed drawing the goggles and painting the orange typography. My classmates agreed that this piece is where my work should be and that I should try to make a piece even bigger than this one which was 8x10. In my next piece I am going to use more interesting words to give my work a more complex and deep meaning.

Ten Works, Two Weeks #2 (Highlights)
12/20/12
In this series I wanted to work on a new surface. These paintings are on balsa wood instead of paper. I used balsa wood because the wood had to be very thin and flexible so I could still sew through it. This technique worked out very well and Mark Rothko's style echoes through these pieces. I tried to use mostly red, black, and white in these pieces. The piece to the left feels unfinished to me because I did not include any gears. However my classmates said it was interesting because of the drawing. In my next piece I want to include a really interesting drawing as well as gears. I would also like to work a little bigger because these pieces (5x7) do not leave much room for illustration.

Pam Anderson
Artist study
This work interested me because of its calmness, an element that my work usually lacks. While the pieces are slighty 'girly' for my taste I do like the stitching that is in almost every piece. I also like the typographic elements. I like this piece specifically becuase of the way it looks like underground layers of Earth. My other favorite piece is called 'Cushion Cut Wishes for Emerald'. I like it because the seperation of sections with strips of lace makes it a strong piece graphically.

I am absolutly crazy about this artists work. I love the 3D nature of it as well as the bold typography. The combination of wooden objects with tight carvings and strong painted graphic elements seized my attension right away. I specifically like this piece because it says 'Failure' which is clearly contradicting this beautiful piece of art while suggesting deeper meaning to the reason it was created. He also has a piece called 'Please Acknowledge the Mechanics of Sitting and Thinking'. I like the piece because it has what looks like complicated plans for a future design. I have had a hard time trying to merge his style with mine because of its sculptural qualities but I am currently on the cusp of creating an object that will model his style.

Ten Works, Two Weeks #1 (Highlights)
11/17/12
In my exploration into a new style I found that my work is becoming abstract and based on tight technical drawings, sewing, collaging, and printing. These gears that show up in my work time after time symbolize my envy of machines. They are perfect and they feel nothing. My favorite piece from this series is the one in the middle. During this project I discovered the best way to start any painting is to cover the surface in news paper and then look for interesting words. This technique really helped me give meaning to my work. In the class critique my peers agreed that I should continue in this direction and keep my work small. From here I would like to get into the habit of using the same color scheme. I want my work to recognizable and clear that it is mine.

Emily Klass

This work intrigues me because of its tight, teechnical detail. The veiwer can tell that it must have been extreamly time consuming and the outcome is perfection. That is what i want for my work, I want people to look at it and think 'how?' Each work is made with graphite pencil. My other favorite piece is called 'Stokes Flow'. It is similar to this piece but with more circles. I want to draw something very small and technical like this work on the wall during my senior art show.

Summer Work Art IV
7/15/12
These pieces were made as my summer work heading into art IV. The portrait was done at the VCU Summer Intensive Program I attended this past summer. Every element in this piece was erased and re-drawn at least 5 times. Every mark I made was constantly being checked by the drawing teacher who stalked around the room and stopped only to yell "What are you doing?!" as the rest of the students and I were furiously scraping away our charcoal sticks on this expensive paper. I learned so much about drawing and seeing in this process. The Other piece was a painting I made when I returned home. It was completely experimental but when we returned to school the class agreed it was their favorite. That piece ended up fueling my work for the next two projects which forced us to make 10 small pieces in 2 weeks.

2012: 3 Works Mixed Media
2/20/12
I am interested in the history of individuals. The events, painful and joyful, that occur in their cognizant timeline. These happenings build the foundation of character. Cause and effect can distort and destroy to bring about another troubled mind or it can love and teach the mind to heal and find happiness. The different events we experience shape us individually to bring about endless diversity.
Some pasts bare much more pain than others but everyone yearns for the touch of acceptance, that holy approval from others which fills us with temporary worth. So it seems inevitable now that when my mother began to date a smoker, she would fall prey to the desiccant, stale smog that clogs her throat and oozes with a blackish drool. I know that with every searing cough and relieving puff she pulls herself closer to a fate that one cannot return from. But my words fall upon deaf ears. Like a single drop of rain in the forest. The machine that we see as the human frame can only be withered so much before it crumbles upon a cold platform of denial. These painful events and so many others are invading my timeline and my actions now fall in the space between curiosity and self-destruction. My need for perfection is coming to a slow end as I realize some of my gears are cracked and breaking. The dark foundation is beginning to seep through my surface. That part of yourself that you hide from others. |
